Importance and distribution

Although there are 170 Fusicladium epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), many species have been transferred to other genera such as Asperisporium, Caproventuria, Cladophialophora, Cladosporium, Deightoniella, Dischloridium, Fuscohilum, Fusicladiella, Fusoidiella, Hadrotrichum, Neofusicladium, Parafusicladium, Passalora, Phaeoisariopsis, Phaeoramularia, Pinaceicola, Porophilomyces, Pseudocercospora, Pseudocladosporium, Pyricularia, Sympoventuria and Venturia. Fusicladium has been reported from a wide range of hosts such as Amelanchier alnifolia (Rosaceae), Astragalus alpinus (Fabaceae), Carya illinoensis (Juglandaceae), Cornus nuttallii (Cornaceae), Eriobotrya japonica (Rosaceae), Erodium cicutarium (Geraniaceae), Euphorbia pulcherrima (Euphorbiaceae), Ficus elastica (Moraceae), Malus pumila (Rosaceae), Oxydendrum arboreum (Ericaceae), Pennisetum purpureum (Poaceae), Platanus sp. (Platanaceae), Pyracantha coccinea (Rosaceae), Pyrus communis (Rosaceae), Salix sp. (Salicaceae), Swietenia mahagoni (Meliaceae) and Tillandsia sp. (Bromeliaceae). Fusicladium has been reported from Africa (Uganda), Asia (Myanmar, Russia), Australia, Europe (Austria, Germany, Poland, Slovakia), North America (Canada, The United States) and South America (Chile). Fusicladium species can cause black spot or scab on apples resulting in severe economic losses (Hashemi et al. 2013).
