Lasiobotrys

Lasiobotrys Kunze, in Kunze & Schmidt, Mykologische Hefte (Leipzig) 2: 88 (1823).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2650; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12073, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascostromata radially around the circumference of the stromatal disc on upper surface of leaves somewhat lower surface of leaves, globose to subglobose, dark brown to black, ascomata solitary or clustered on stromata, multi-locules on stromatal with pale brown to dark brown of hair clustered among a basal of ascomata and stromatal, cells of stromata comprising textura prismatica, cells of ascomata comprising textura globosa to angularis. Peridium two-layered, outer layer composed of pigmented slightly thick-walled brown to black cells of textura angularis, inner layer composed of hyaline thin-walled cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium hyaline, pseudoparaphyses, anastomosing surpassing the asci. Asci oblong with short pedicel, 8-spored. Ascospore one septate, oblong to oval with upper cell broader, surface of spore verrucose, slightly constricted at the septum, hyaline when immature. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Type species: Lasiobotrys lonicerae (Fr.) Kunze

Notes: Lasiobotrys is unique in having an ascomata developed among hyphae under a stromatal disc (forming a “roof-like” structure). Lasiobotrys resembles species of Venturiales in having apiosporous, lightly pigmented ascospores, and subclavate to obclavate asci. The systematic position of Lasiobotrys is not well-understood and is currently in Venturiales genera incertae sedis. Fresh specimen with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Lasiobotrys.
