Venturia
Venturia Sacc., Syll. fung. (Abellini) 1: 586 (1882).
Index Fungorum number: IF 5717; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06353, 123 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 58 species with molecular data.
Parasitic or endophytic on dicotyledonous leaves, bark and wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata small, solitary or scattered or gregarious, immersed and becoming erumpent, black, globose, subglobose, papillate, ostiolate. Peridium thin, 1-layer, dark brow to black, comprised of textura angularis. Hamathecium rarely observed, or evanescent at maturity. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, oblong to obclavate, pedicel thick or sometimes lacking, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores partially overlapping, with broadly rounded ends, hyaline to pale brown, uniseptate, slightly constricted at the septum, with upper cell shorter than the lower cell, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde et al. 2013).
Type species: Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) G. Winter.
Notes: Venturia is characterised by solitary, scattered or gregarious ascomata, oblong to obclavate asci, and hyaline to pale brown, uniseptate ascospores. Schubert et al. (2003) mentioned Spilocaea as the asexual state of Venturia. Schoch et al. (2009a, b) showed Venturia as a well-supported monophyletic group and referred to Microthyriales. Seifert et al. (2011) synonymized Spilocaea under Fuscicladium. Zhang et al. (2011) reported that Spilocaea pomi, the type species of Spilocaea is a well-resolved genus in Venturiaceae. Hyde et al. (2013) agreed with Zhang et al. (2011) and considered Spilocaea as the asexual state of Venturia, thus reducing Spilocaea to synonymy under Venturia. Hyde et al. (2013) proposed Venturia over Spilocaea since the number of epithets are much greater in Venturia compared to Spilocaea. Venturia is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and type genus of Venturiaceae. Molecular markers available for Venturia are ITS, LSU, Actin, BTUB, Calmodulin, GAPDH, RPB2 and TEF-1.
