Metacoleroa

Metacoleroa Petr., Annls mycol. 25(3/4): 332 (1927).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3139; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06361, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

See Petrak (1927).

Type species: Metacoleroa dickiei (Berk. & Broome) Petr.

Notes: Metacoleroa is characterised by an ascomata with a well-defined subiculum, not cupulate when dry and olivaceous brown ascospores (Zhang et al. 2011). Barr (1987) considered Metacoleroa distinct from Venturia based on the superficial ascomata with a thin, stromatic layer below the ascomata. Zhang et al. (2011) found no mature ascoma on the specimen examined (K(M): 143928, syntype). In the phylogenetic analysis of Crous et al. (2007) based on LSU sequence data, Metacoleroa clustered in Venturia sensu lato, and was treated as synonym of Venturia. This synonymy was not followed by consequent authors since the phylogeny of (Crous et al. 2007) was not well resolved. Metacoleroa is a distinct genus in Venturiaceae but fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm this placement. Molecular markers available for Metacoleroa are LSU, SSU and mtSSU.
