Fraxinicola

Fraxinicola Crous, M. Shen & Y. Zhang ter, in Shen et al., Stud. Mycol. 96: 217 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 831518; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12061, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Parasitic on leaves. In vivo: Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered over the entire leaf surface, immersed, globose to subglobose, pseudoparaphysate, ostiolate, papillate, with or without setae. Peridium thin, composed of pigmented cells of textura angularis. Asci bitunicate, oblong to obclavate, with a short pedicel. Ascospores uniseriate, partially overlapping to biseriate, especially at the base, ellipsoidal, with broadly rounded ends, olivaceous pale brown, uniseptate, slightly constricted at the septum, the upper cells often shorter and wider than the lower ones, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Conidiophores fusicladium-like, arising in clusters (sporodochia) from erumpent subcuticular to intraepidermal, few-celled stromata, or from terminal or lateral hyphae in culture, erect, unbranched, geniculate, septate, dark brown, smooth, walls thickened. Sporodochia interconnected by subcuticular to intraepidermal mycelium of melanised, partly swollen short cells and intercellular chlamydospores. Conidiogenous cells terminal, geniculate, proliferation sympodial, with a few to numerous truncate loci, somewhat refractive or darkened. Conidia solitary, smooth, lanceolate but apical tip rounded, 0–2-septate, pale medium brown, with a truncate base which is often somewhat thickened (adapted from Shen et al. 2020).

Type species: Fraxinicola fraxini (Aderh.) Crous, M. Shen & Y. Zhang ter

Notes: Fraxinicola is characterised by globose to subglobose, pseudoparaphysate ascomata, oblong to obclavate asci and olivaceous pale brown, uniseptate ascospores. Fraxinicola fraxini was previously known as Venturia fraxini but was not congeneric with the type species of Venturia, V. inaequalis. Venturia fraxini was previously reported as an endophyte of Fraxinus excelsior (Ibrahim et al. 2016, Shen et al. 2020). Shen et al. (2020) synonymized F. proteae with F. fraxini since the former species formed a conspecific lineage together with isolates of F. fraxini. Fraxinicola is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-supported genus in Venturiaceae. Molecular markers available for Fraxinicola include ITS, LSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
