Fagicola

Fagicola Crous, M. Shen & Y. Zhang ter, in Shen et al., Stud. Mycol. 96: 217 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 831517; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12059, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Mycelium consisting of pale to medium brown, smooth to finely verruculose, branched hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores integrated, terminal on hyphae, aseptate or septate, mostly reduced to conidiogenous cells, also lateral, visible as small, protruding, denticle-like loci. Conidiogenous cells subcylindrical, pale to medium brown, smooth to finely verruculose, tapering to several apical indistinct loci. Ramoconidia present. Conidia pale brown, smooth, guttulate, subcylindrical to narrowly ellipsoid, occurring in simple or branched chains, aseptate or septate, tapering towards subtruncate ends; hila mostly inconspicuous, i.e. rarely thickened or darkened-refractive (adapted from Crous et al. 2007b, Shen et al. 2020).

Type species: Fagicola fagi (Crous & de Hoog) Crous, M. Shen & Y. Zhang ter

Notes: Fagicola is characterised by aseptate or septate conidiophores, subcylindrical, pale to medium brown conidiogenous cells, and pale brown, smooth, guttulate conidia. Fagicola fagi was previously known as Fusicladium fagi but was not congeneric with the type species of Fusicladium, F. virescens. A multigene phylogenetic analysis based on ITS, LSU, TEF-1, BTUB and RPB2 sequences by Shen et al. (2020) placed Fagicola sibling to other genera of Venturiacaeae. Fagicola is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Venturiacaeae. Molecular markers available for Fagicola are ITS, LSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
