Coleroa
Coleroa Rabenh., Klotzschii Herb. Viv. Mycol., Edn 1: no. 1456 (in sched.) (1850).
Index Fungorum number: IF 1174; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06358, 30 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Habitat parasitic and saprobic on dicotyledons. Sexual morph: Ascomata small-sized, scattered, or in small groups, superficial, globose, subglobose, setae few to numerous, papillate, ostiolate. Peridium thin, composed of lightly pigmented thin-walled cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium ca. 2 μm broad, evanescing. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, fusiform to obclavate, with or without pedicel. Ascospores ellipsoidal with broadly to narrowly rounded ends, pale brown with greenish tint, uniseptate, constricted at the septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2011).
Type species: Coleroa chaetomium (Kunze) Rabenh.
Notes: Coleroa is characterised by superficial, globose, subglobose ascomata, fissitunicate, fusiform to obclavate asci and ellipsoidal, uniseptate ascospores with broadly to narrowly rounded ends. Zhang et al. (2011) accepted Coleroa in Venturiaceae based on the scattered, setose ascomata, deliquescing pseudoparaphyses, fusoid to obclavate asci and the 1- septate, constricted ascospores. This treatment was followed by Hyde et al. (2013) and Kirk et al. (2013). Coleroa is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Venturiaceae. Vu et al. (2019) provided LSU, ITS and RPB2 sequence data for Coleroa. More collections with DNA sequence data will help to confirm whether Coleroa is monophyletic and its relationship with other genera in Venturiaceae. Molecular markers available for Coleroa are ITS, LSU, Actin, BTUB, GAPDH, RPB2 and TEF-1.
