Neofusicladium

Neofusicladium Crous, M. Shen & Y. Zhang ter, in Shen et al., Stud. Mycol. 96: 203 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 831512; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12040, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Mycelium consisting of pale to medium brown, smooth, branched, septate hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells, or with basal supporting cell, solitary, erect, pale brown, smooth, subcylindrical to doliiform, sometimes dimorphic. Conidiogenous cells terminal or lateral, integrated, subcylindrical or doliiform, pale to medium brown, smooth, proliferating sympodial; conidiogenous loci somewhat thickened and darkened, not refractive. Ramoconidia brown, smooth, subcylindrical or fusoid-ellipsoid, aseptate or septate. Conidia mostly occurring in branched chains, pale brown, smooth, subcylindrical to fusoid-ellipsoidal, aseptate or septate, sometimes widest in middle, truncate at the ends; hila somewhat darkened and thickened, but not refractive (adapted from Shen et al. 2020).

Type species: Neofusicladium eucalypti (Crous & R.G. Shivas) Crous, M. Shen & Y. Zhang ter

Notes: Neofusicladium is characterised by subcylindrical to doliiform, sometimes dimorphic conidiophores, subcylindrical or doliiform, pale to medium brown conidiogenous cells and pale brown, smooth, subcylindrical to fusoid-ellipsoidal conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Shen et al. (2020) based on ITS, LSU, TEF-1, BTUB2 and RPB2 sequences, Neofusicladium grouped basal to Sympoventuriaceae. The dimorphic conidiophores are a diagnostic character for Neofusicladium. Neofusicladium is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Sympoventuriaceae. Molecular markers available for Neofusicladium are ITS, LSU, BTUB, TEF-1 and RPB2.
