Matsushimaea
Matsushimaea Subram., Kavaka 5: 96 (1978) [1977].
Index Fungorum number: IF 8865; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08831, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Mycelium consisting of branched, septate, olive, smooth-walled, frequently forming hyphal coils, occasionally with irregular swellings not constricted at the septa. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores micronematous, often reduced to conidiogenous cells with conidia arising directly on hyphae. Conidiogenous cells integrated, mono- or polyblastic, intercalary or terminal, elongated, pale brown, smooth-walled. Conidia solitary, sessile or on short protrusions, irregularly shaped, composed of a basal cell from which arise acropetal chains of cells, giving place to moniliform, septate, often branched filaments, remaining attached at maturity; cells globose, subglobose, ellipsoidal to somewhat pyriform, brown, smooth-walled (adapted from Crous et al. 2018).
Type species: Matsushimaea fasciculata Subram.
Notes: Matsushimaea is characterised by micronematous conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells, solitary, and sessile conidia or sometimes produced on short protrusions. Matsushimaea fasciculata was previously known as Torula fasciculata but was not congeneric with the type species of Torula, T. monilis. Castañeda Ruiz et al. (1996) added M. fertilis and Matsushima (1996) added M. magna. Crous et al. (2018) provided ITS and LSU sequence data for M. monilioides found from garden soil in Spain and confirmed the phylogenetic placement of Matsushimaea in Sympoventuriaceae. Crous et al. (2018) excluded M. fertilis from Matsushimaea as it was related to Cladophialophora (Herpotrichiellaceae, Chaetothyriales) and was similar to the sequences of the ex-type of C. boppii. Matsushimaea is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Sympoventuriaceae. Molecular markers are available for two species namely M. monilioides (ITS, LSU) and M. fasciculata (ITS, LSU, SSU).
