Acroconidiellina

Colonies effuse, dark blackish brown hairy. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium superficial, composed of a network of branched and anastomosing, septate, pale olivaceous brown or brown, smooth hyphae. Sclerotia numerous, often flattened, dark blackish brown to black, tuberculate. Setae arising laterally on the hyphae, erect or ascending, straight or flexuous, usually subulate, multiseptate, simple, smooth, dark-brown, paler towards the apex. Conidiophores solitary, arising terminally and laterally on the hyphae, erect, smooth, septate, sometimes swollen at the base. Conidia broadly ellipsoidal, brown, echinulate,uniseptate sometimes slightly constricted at the septum (adapted from Ellis 1971).

Notes: Acroconidiellina is characterised by superficial, pale olivaceous brown or brown mycelium, numerous, often flattened, dark blackish brown to black sclerotia, smooth, septate conidiophores and brown, echinulate,uniseptate conidia. Acroconidiellina previously accommodated four species A. loudetiae, A. chloridis, A. urtiagae and A. arecae. Sivanesan (1984) added Zeuctomorpha arecae as the sexual morph of A. arecae based on a specimen collected from Areca catechu in India. Eriksson and Hawksworth (1998) categorized Zeuctomorpha in Pleosporaceae and this were followed by several authors (Kirk et al. 2001; Kodsueb et al. 2006; Lumbsch and Huhndorf 2010). Zhang et al. (2011) treated Zeuctomorpha arecae as a synonym of Acantharia arecae and Zeuctomorpha as a synonym of Acantharia. Zhang et al. (2012) resurrected Zeuctomorpha and listed Acroconidiellina as the asexual morph, suggesting its placement in Venturiales. Ariyawansa et al. (2015) provided an updated “backbone” tree of Pleosporaceae, excluded Zeuctomorpha and transferred it to Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis. Hernández-Restrepo et al. (2016) reduced Zeuctomorpha arecae to synonymy under Acroconidiellina arecae based on one fungus one name rule. Hernández-Restrepo et al. (2016) confirmed the placement of Acroconidiellina in Sympoventuriaceae (Venturiales, Dothideomycetes) based on ITS and LSU sequences from the conidial isolate of Acroconidiellina arecae (NFCCI 3696). Acroconidiellina is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Sympoventuriaceae. Molecular markers available for Acroconidiellina are ITS and LSU.
