Sympodiella

Sympodiella W.B. Kendr., Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 41(4): 519 (1958).

Index Fungorum number: IF 10151; Facesoffungi number: FoF 09216, 7 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2023), 4 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on decaying needles of Pinaceae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium dark brown, sparse, superficial composed of dark brown, septate, branched, prostrate, anastomosing hyphae, forming a network on both sides of the needles. Conidiophores solitary, dark brown below half, pale brown towards tip, septate, simple, erect or ascending. Conidiogenous cells integrated or discrete, sympodial. Conidia acropleurogenous, cylindrical, arthric, truncate at both ends, aseptate, hyaline, in false chains, not forming branches (adapted from Kendrick 1958).

Type species: Sympodiella acicola W.B. Kendr.

Notes: Sympodiella is characterized by superficial networks of darkly pigmented, septate, anastomosing hyphae, solitary, simple, septate, and darkly pigmented conidiophores, except at the extreme apex, cylindrical, smooth-walled and hyaline conidia (Kendrick 1958). Crous et al. (2019b) designated an epitype, CBS H-1620 for S. acicola. Shen et al. (2020) accepted Sympodiella in Cylindrosympodiaceae based on multi-gene phylogeny. Molecular markers available for Sympodiella are ITS, LSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
