Thaxteriellopsis

Thaxteriellopsis Sivan., Panwar & S.J. Kaur, Kavaka 4: 39 (1977) [1976].

Index Fungorum number: IF 5409; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01866, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, dark brown subiculum, solitary or scattered, globose to sub globose, reddish-brown to dark brown, with brown to dark brown, septate, setae, mostly at the apex. Peridium comprising 3–4 layers of red brown to dark brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising filiform, hyaline pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, apically rounded, short pedicellate, with long apical region with amorphous contents. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, fusiform to clavate, broader above, straight to slightly curved, 5-septate, constricted at septum, hyaline, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: hyphomycetous, helicosporous. Micronematous conidia-like structures, develop directly from hyphae in culture (from Boonmee et al. 2011).

Type species: Thaxteriellopsis lignicola Sivan., Panwar & S.J. Kaur

Notes: Thaxteriellopsis is characterised by globose to sub globose reddish brown to dark brown ascomata, covered with brown to black setae, cylindrical asci with a long pedicel and fusiform ascospores with 5 septa. Boonmee et al. (2011) designated an epitype and reported that T. lignicola produced micronematous, brown, helicosporous, conidia-like structures on the hyphae in culture. An asexual record of T. lignicola was reported by Doilom et al. (2017) based on multi-gene analysis. New records of the genus were also reported by Lu et al. (2018). Molecular markers available for Thaxteriellopsis include ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
