Podonectria
Podonectria Petch, Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 7(3): 146 (1921).
Index Fungorum number: IF 4280; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06818, 9 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on host. Habit occurring in associations with scale insects. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, scattered, solitary, subglobose-globose, light yellow-reddish, covered with light brown mycelium. Peridium composed of several-layers of pale yellowish-brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium filiform, branched, septate, hyaline pseudoparaphyses embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindro-clavate, short pedicellate. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, clavate to fusiform, hyaline to pale brown, trans-septate, wall minutely verruculose. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Boonmee et al. 2011).
Type species: Podonectria coccicola (Ellis & Everh.) Petch
Notes: Podonectria is characterised by superficial, scattered, solitary, subglobose-globose, light yellow-reddish ascomata, filiform, branched, septate, hyaline hamathecium, cylindro-clavate, short pedicellate asci and clavate to fusiform, hyaline to pale brown, trans-septate ascospores. Rossman (1978) monographed Podonectria and accepted eight species. Podonectria species grow on scale insects forming long trans-septate ascospores Hyde et al. (2011) mentioned the asexual morphs of Podonectria as Peziotrichum and Tetracrium. Boomee et al (2011) re-examined the specimen determined as P. coccicola by Rossman (1978) found on scale insects on bark of orange trees in The United States (Florida), and provided an updated description of Podonectria. Podonectria differs from all members in Tubeufiaceae in its habitat and light yellow-reddish color of the ascomata. Podonectria is a distinct genus in Tubeufiaceae but lacks molecular data. Fresh specimens with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Podonectria. An attempt to re-collect the type species is needed. Podonectria needs epitypification.
