Pleurohelicosporium

Pleurohelicosporium Y.Z. Lu, J.C. Kang & K.D. Hyde, in Lu et al., Fungal Diversity 92: 247 (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 554884; Facesoffungi number: FoF 04743; 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on decaying wood. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous, helicosporous. Colonies on the substratum superficial, effuse, gregarious, pale brown. Mycelium mostly immersed, partly superficial, composed of branched, septate hyphae, pale brown, with masses of crowded, glistening conidia. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, cylindrical, branched, septate, pale brown, smooth-walled. Conidiogenous cells holoblastic, monoblastic, integrated, sympodial, intercalary, cylindrical, with denticles, pale brown, smooth walled. Conidia solitary, pleurogenous, helicoid, rounded at tip, becoming loosely coiled in water, indistinctly multiseptate, guttulate, hyaline to pale brown, smooth-walled (adapted from Lu et al. 2018).

Type species: Pleurohelicosporium parvisporum Y.Z. Lu, J.C. Kang & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Pleurohelicosporium morphologically resembles Neohelicosporium but is phylogenetically distinct from the latter and other helicosporous genera. Pleurohelicosporium differs from Neohelicosporium by its pleurogenous conidia while the conidia of Neohelicosporium are acrogenous or acropleurogenous. Pleurohelicosporium is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Tubeufiaceae. Molecular markers available for Pleurohelicosporium are ITS, LSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
