Parahelicomyces
Parahelicomyces Goh, in Hsieh et al., Mycol. Progr. 20(2): 182 (2021).
Index Fungorum number: IF 837332; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12026, 7 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 7 species with molecular data.
Colonies on natural substratum effuse, white, cottony, pulverulent. Mycelium mostly superficial and partly immersed, composed of branched, subhyaline to fuscous, smooth-walled, septate hyphae. Stalked-sclerotia absent. Sexual morph: Unknown Asexual morph: Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, arising from superficial repent mycelium, branching below, anastomosing, straight or flexuous, subhyaline to very dilute brown, 3–9-septate, bearing small cylindrical conidiogenous tooth-like protuberances along the shaft near the septa. Conidiogenous cells cylindrical, monoblastic or rarely polyblastic, sometimes bladder-like and bearing minute tooth-like projections. Conidia hyaline, coiled, conidial filament hygroscopic, smooth-walled, indistinctly 21–23(−26)-septate, conidial secession schizolytic. Secondary conidia absent (adapted from Hsieh et al. 2021).
Type species: Parahelicomyces talbotii (Goos) S.Y. Hsieh, Goh & C.H. Kuo
Notes: Parahelicomyces is characterised by macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, cylindrical, monoblastic or rarely polyblastic conidiogenous cells and hyaline, coiled, 21–23(−26)-septate conidia with hygroscopic conidial filament. Hsieh et al. (2021) renamed Pseudohelicomyces talbotii as Parahelicomyces talbotii because Pseudohelicomyces was a homonym and illegitimate. Hsieh et al. (2021) also transferred Pseudohelicomyces species to Parahelicomyces as new combinations. Parahelicomyces is a distinct and well-defined genus in Tubeufiaceae. Molecular markers available include ITS, LSU, SSU, TEF-1 and RPB2.
