Importance and distribution

There are 74 Helicosporium epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but many have been transferred to other genera such as Acanthohelicospora, Chaetosphaeria, Circinotrichum, Dichotomophthoropsis, Drepanospora, Helicodendron, Helicoma, Helicomyces, Helicoon, Helicotruncatum, Hiospira, Neohelicosporium, Papulaspora, Pleohelicoon, Pseudocercospora, Pseudohelicomyces, Thaxteriella, Trochophora, Tubeufia and Xenosporium. Helicosporium is known from various plant families such as Arecaceae, Betulaceae, Cupressaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Fagaceae, Malvaceae, Moraceae, Platanaceae, Salicaceae, Sapindaceae, Smilacaceae and Urticaceae. Helicosporium has a worldwide distribution including Asia (Japan, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam), Australia, Europe (Czech Republic, USSR) and North America (Caribbean (Cuba), Canada, Mexico, The United States).
