Importance and distribution
There are 37 Helicomyces epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but several species have been transferred to Acanthohelicosporium, Drepanoconis, Helicodendron, Helicoma, Helicosporium, Hobsonia, Lambertella, Neohelicosporium, Pseudohelicomyces, Thaxteriella, Trochophora and Tubeufia. Helicomyces comprises 17 species known from a wide range of hosts such as Archontophoenix alexandrae (Arecaceae), Bambusa sp. (Poaceae), Borassus flabellifer (Arecaceae), Casuarina equisetifolia (Casuarinaceae), Cocos nucifera (Arecaceae), Cryptomeria japonica (Taxodiaceae), Elaeis guineensis (Arecaceae), Fagus sylvatica (Fagaceae), Fraxinus sp. (Oleaceae), Juglans sp. (Juglandaceae). Helicomyces is reported from Africa (Tanzania), Asia (Hong Kong, India, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand), Europe (Poland, USSR), Oceania (Australia, New Zealand) and The United States (Alabama, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Paraguay).
