Helicodochium

Helicodochium J.S. Monteiro, R.F. Castañeda, A.C. Cruz & Gusmão, Mycotaxon 127: 6 (2014).

Index Fungorum number: IF 804995; Facesoffungi number: FoF 04710, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies on the natural substrate effuse, pale pinkish. Mycelium mostly immersed. Conidiomata sporodochial, apothecium-like, dry, scattered, pinkish to white, consisting of numerous conidiophores arising from a stroma of globose, thick-walled, pale brown cells with an umbilicate centre. Conidiophores macronematous, erect, branched, septate, pale brown, arising from a thick-walled, pale brown, pseudoparenchymatous stromata with globose texture. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, determinate, terminal, pale brown to hyaline. Conidial secession schizolytic. Conidia solitary, coiled, planate, pluri-septate, hyaline (adapted from Monteiro et al. 2014).

Type species: Helicodochium amazonicum J.S. Monteiro, R.F. Castañeda, A.C. Cruz & Gusmão

Notes: Helicodochium is characterised by sporodochial, apothecium-like conidiomata, monoblastic, integrated, determinate, pale brown to hyaline conidiogenous cells and solitary, coiled, planate, pluri-septate, hyaline conidia. Wijayawardene et al. (2017a, b) referred Helicodochium to Ascomycota genera incertae sedis. Lu et al. (2018) added a second species, H. aquaticum and accepted Helicodochium as a distinct genus in Tubeufiaceae based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. Helicodochium is phylogenetically related to Helicohyalinum with good statistical support. Helicodochium is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus from other known genera in Tubeufiaceae. Molecular markers available for Helicodochium are ITS, LSU, TEF1 and RPB2.
