Acanthophiobolus Berl., Atti Congr. Bot. Intern. di Genova, 1892: 571 (1893)

Saprobic on cloth. Ascomata superficial, globose to subglobose, reddish brown to dark brown, ostiole central, with red brown to dark brown setae, which are septate, and taper towards the apex. Peridium comprising several-layers; inner layer composed of textura prismatica-porrecta and hyaline to pale, outer layer composed of 2–3 layers of dark brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising filiform pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, elongate, cylindro-clavate, short pedicellate. Ascospores filiform, septate, spiral in the ascus, hyaline.


Type species: Acanthophiobolus helminthosporus (Rehm) Berl.


Notes: Acanthophiobolus was introduced by Berlese (1893) with A. helminthosporus as type species. Acanthophiobolus is unique in having globose to subglobose bright colour ascomata, covered by red brown to dark brown and long setae and asci are cylindrical with filiform and spiral ascospores. Acanthophiobolus needs revision and epitypification.
