Acanthophiobolus

Acanthophiobolus Berl., Atti Congr. Bot. Intern. di Genova, 1892: 571 (1893)

Saprobic on cloth. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, globose to subglobose, reddish brown to dark brown, with centrally located ostiole, with reddish brown to dark brown, septate setae tapering towards the apex. Peridium comprising several-layers; inner layer composed of hyaline to pale brown cells of textura prismatica-porrecta and outer layer composed of 2–3 layers of dark brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising filiform pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, elongate, cylindro-clavate, short pedicellate. Ascospores filiform, septate, spirally arranged in ascus, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Boonmee et al. 2011).

 

Type species: Acanthophiobolus helicosporus (Berk. & Broome) J. Walker

 

Notes: Acanthophiobolus is unique in having globose to subglobose bright colored ascomata, covered by reddish brown to dark brown, long setae and cylindrical to filiform ascospores which are spirally arranged in the asci. Acanthophiobolus needs revision and epitypification. For synonyms see Species Fungorum (2023).
