Constrictolumina

Constrictolumina Aptroot, M.P. Nelsen & Lücking, in Lücking et al., Lichenologist 48: 756 (2016).

Index Fungorum number: IF 816872; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08795, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Thallus not corticate. Sexual morph: Ascomata single, roughly conical, not in pseudostroma, but sometimes fused sideways. Ostiole apical. Hamathecium hyaline, completely clear, filaments thick at the base, much thinner above, but not anastomosing. Asci clavate. Ascospores 1–3-septate, rarely submuriform, with irregular endospore formation, sometimes with pseudosepta, often one or two cells pinched in the middle, smooth or ornamented, hyaline, rarely becoming brown, often becoming granular ornamented. Asexual morph: Pycnidia sometimes present (Aptroot & Lucking 2016).

Type species: Constrictolumina cinchonae (Ach.) Lücking, M.P. Nelsen & Aptroot

Notes: Constrictolumina is unique in having hamathecium filaments at the base much thicker than at the top, not anastomosing, and ascospores frequently with extra wall invaginations besides the (sub-) median septum. Constrictolumina species were previously accommodated in Arthopyrenia, a collective genus from which peculiar groups have been divided. Arthopyrenia sensu stricto is now restricted to a very small basic group (Hyde et al. 2013). Constrictolumina comprises tropical members, that is, nearly all tropical species that had remained in Arthopyrenia after splitting off from Anisomeridium (Harris 1975). In the phylogenetic analyses of Aptroot and Lücking (2016) and Lücking et al. (2016), lichenized species of Arthopyrenia sensu lato formed two lineages with C. malaccitula branching separately. In a dataset including 11 species, half of them clustered together with notable differences in the ascospores while those which grouped with C. malaccitula had larger ascospores with more distinct secondary constrictions, and granular ornamentation. Hongsanan et al. (2020b) restricted only five species to Constrictolumina and transferred the remaining species characterised by larger ascospores to Macroconstrictolumina. Constrictolumina sensu stricto is a well-defined genus in Trypetheliaceae. Molecular markers available for Constrictolumina are LSU, mtSSU and TEF-1.
