Richonia

Richonia Boud., Revue mycol., Toulouse 7(no. 27): 224 (1885).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4751; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08396, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Perithecia scattered, globose, superficial, slightly depressed within grumose carbonaceous. Paraphyses numerous thin, branched and intricate. Asci 2–6 spored. Ascospores rounded, ellipsoidal, obtuse, uniseptate, constricted at the septa, subhyaline to hyaline, guttulate, rounded at both ends, with thick ornamented undulating sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Boudier 1885).

Type species: Richonia variospora Boud.

Notes: Richonia is characterised by globose, superficial ascomata, ellipsoidal, obtuse, uniseptate ascospores with a thick ornamented undulating sheath (Hawksworth 1979). R. variospora was reported from several regions in France (Hawksworth 1979). Arx and Müller (1975) and Hawksworth (1979) treated Richonia as a member of Zopfiaceae but this taxonomic placement is doubtful. DNA sequence data is lacking for Richonia hence, fresh collections are required to confirm the correct taxonomic placement of the genus.
