Fuscosphaeria

Fuscosphaeria D.G. Knapp & Pintye, in Pintye & Knapp, Mycol. Progr. 20(1): 44 (2021).

Index Fungorum number: IF 835597; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11764, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Colonies on MEA yellowish grey and flat with sparse aerial mycelium. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Strains stain the agar dark brown. On PDA, colonies are dark grey and flat with a pale brown marginal zone, and they stain the agar light brown. Chlamydospores present (adapted from Pintye et al. 2021).

Type species: Fuscosphaeria hungarica D.G. Knapp & Pintye

Notes: Fuscosphaeria is known only by hyphal morphology. Fuscosphaeria forms sterile, depressed, globose, sporocarp-like organizations on the surface of autoclaved nettle immersed in WA media with minced vegetables and pine needles (Pintye & Knapp 2021). A change of color from orange to dark brown was also observed with WA media. Fuscosphaeria is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Torulaceae. Molecular markers available for Fuscosphaeria include LSU, SSU, and TEF-1.
