Rutola
Rutola J.L. Crane & Schokn., Can J Bot. 55 (24): 3015 (1978).
Index Fungorum number: IF 9768; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06656, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies oval, powdery, dry, black. Conidiophores appressed to substrate, micronematous, branched, septate, pale brown. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal or intercalary, monoblastic, pale brown. Conidia phragmosporous, composed on long, simple to branched chains of brown, verruculose acrogenous cells, constricted at septa, fragmenting into segments, 0–multiseptate (adapted from Crous et al. 2015).
Type species: Rutola graminis (Desm.) J.L. Crane & Schokn.
Notes: Rutola is characterised by oval, powdery, dry, black colonies, micronematous, branched, septate, pale brown conidiophores, and phragmosporous 0– multiseptate conidia. Rutola graminis, previously known as Torula graminis was transferred to Rutola due to lack of molecular data (Crane & Schoknecht 1977). Rutola differs from Torula in lacking the diagnostic coronate conidiogenous cells (Crane & Schoknecht 1977). Crous et al. (2019c) designated the lectotype and epitype of R. graminis. Rutola formed a monophyletic lineage in Torulaceae based on phylogenetic analyses of LSU sequence data (Crous et al. 2019c). Molecular markers available for Rutola are ITS, LSU and RPB2.
