Index Fungorum number: IF 823259; Facesoffungi number: FoF 03860, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on decaying wood of Avicennia marina from marine environments. Sexual morph: Ascomata black, semi-immersed to immersed, globose to subglobose, solitary to gregarious, coriaceous to carbonaceous, ostiolate, ostiolar neck thickened laterally, with reddish brown neck. Peridium comprising two layers; inner stratum comprising hyaline to light brown cells of textura angularis and outer stratum with light brown to brown cells of textura angularis fusing with the host tissue. Hamathecium composed of narrow to wide, numerous, septate, unbranched, hyaline, cellular pseudoparaphyses resembling hyphae embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, thick-walled, clavate, with moderately long pedicel, apically rounded, with an ocular chamber surrounded by distinct apical apparatus. Ascospores uniseriately to biseriately arranged, partially overlapping, hyaline, fusiform to ellipsoidal, guttulate, muriform, highly constricted at middle septum, smooth-walled, with a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Devadatha et al. 2018).
Type species: Thyridariella mangrovei Devadatha, V.V. Sarma, K.D. Hyde, D.N. Wanas. & E.B.G. Jones
Notes: Thyridariella is characterised by globose to subglobose ascomata, clavate asci with a moderately long pedicel and hyaline, fusiform to ellipsoidal, guttulate ascospores. Thyridariella resembles Parathyridaria in having lateral thickening of the ostiolar neck and guttulate ascospores (Jaklitsch & Voglmayr 2016, Devadatha et al. 2018). However, Thyridariella has hyaline, muriform ascospores while Parathyridaria has pale to greyish brown ascospores (Jaklitsch & Voglmayr 2016, Devadatha et al. 2018). Thyridariella is a distinct and well-supported genus in Thyridariaceae. Molecular markers available for Thyridariella are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
