Ulospora
Ulospora D. Hawksw., Malloch & Sivan., in Hawksworth, Can. J. Bot. 57(2): 96 (1979).
Index Fungorum number: IF 5664; Facesoffungi number: FoF 04645, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on dead leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata cleistothecial, black, simple, scattered, erumpent to superficial, globose to subglobose, carbonaceous, pseudoparenchymatous, without ostiole. Peridium composed of textura angularis cells comprising two layers, outer layer comprising black, thick-walled cells, inner layer comprising hyaline, thin-walled cells. Hamathecium numerous branched, filiform, hyphal-like, septate pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, hyaline, ovoid to pyriform, apically rounded, pedicellate, thick-walled. Ascospores glabrous, ellipsoid, brown to dark brown, septate, 1-septate, constricted at the septum, with rounded ends, guttulate, with germ-slits, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Doilom et al. 2018).
Type species: Ulospora bilgramii (D. Hawksw., C. Booth & Morgan-Jones) D. Hawksw., Malloch & Sivan.
Notes: Ulospora is characterised by non-ostiolate, superficial, scattered, black ascocarps, ovoid to pyriform asci and broadly ellipsoid, uniseptate ascospores. Ulospora is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Testudinaceae. Molecular markers available for Ulospora are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
