Muritestudina

Muritestudina Wanas., E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde, in Wanasinghe et al., Stud. Fung. 2(1): 226 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF F554051; Facesoffungi number: FoF 03866, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on unidentified terrestrial dead twigs on the ground. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, immersed, coriaceous, black, globose to subglobose, ostiolate. Ostiole central, papillate, with an irregular, pore-like opening, plugged by brown, filamentous hyphae, and occasionally lighter in colour. Peridium composed of 4–5-layers with brown to dark-brown, cells of textura angularis fusing and indistinguishable from the host tissues. Hamathecium comprising septate, cellular pseudoparaphyses, situated between and above the asci, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindric-clavate, with a distinct pedicel, apically rounded with an ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping 2-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoidal, 10–12-transversely septate, with 2–4-longitudinal septa, muriform, constricted at the septa, guttulate, smooth-walled, surrounded by a thick, wide mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wanasinghe et al. 2017)

Type species: Muritestudina chiangraiensis Wanasinghe, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Muritestudina is unique in having cylindrical-clavate asci and hyaline, smooth-walled, ellipsoidal, muriform ascospores with large guttules. Molecular markers available for Muritestudina are ITS, LSU, SSU, TEF-1 and RPB2.
