Xenomonodictys

Xenomonodictys Hern. -Restr., Karimi, Alizadeh & T. Ghanbary, in Crous et. al., Persoonia 45: 401 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 837750; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11732, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores semi-micronematous, hyaline to subhyaline, mostly reduced to conidiogenous cells arising from the mycelium. Conidiogenous cells hyaline to subhyaline, cylindrical. Conidia multicellular, curved, solitary, composed of brown cells of different tones, usually with basal cell paler than the rest (adapted from Crous et al. 2020).

Type species: Xenomonodictys iranica Hern. -Restr., Karimi, Alizadeh & T. Ghanbary

Notes: Xenomonodictys is characterised by micronematous, hyaline to subhyaline conidiophores, cylindrical conidiogenous cells and multicellular conidia. Xenomonodictys morphologically resembles Monodictys but is phylogenetically distinct. Monodictys is polyphyletic with some species residing in Pleosporales together with Paramonodictys (Parabambusicolaceae), Pleomonodictys (Pleomonodictydaceae), some in Tubeufia (Tubeufiaceae) and Aquastroma (Parabambusicolaceae) in Dothideomycetes while some species are placed in Sordariomycetes distributed in several genera such as Dematiosporium, Ascotaiwania (Savoryellalceae), Neomonodictys (Pleurotheciaceae), Trichocladium (Chaetomiaceae) and Nereiospora (Microascales) (Hernández-Restrepo et al. 2017, 2020). Xenomonodictys is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Sporormiaceae. Molecular markers available for Xenomonodictys include ITS and LSU.
