Sporormurispora

Sporormurispora Wanas., Bulgakov, Gafforov & K.D. Hyde, in Wanasinghe et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-018-0395-7, [157] (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 554209; Facesoffungi number: FoF 04048, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic in terrestrial habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata black, immersed to erumpent, solitary, gregarious or confluent, globose, uniloculate, with an ostiole. Ostiole central, papillate, smooth. Peridium thick, comprising 2 layers, outer layer comprising heavily pigmented, thin-walled, blackish to dark brown amorphous layer, middle layer comprising thick-walled, blackish to dark brown loosely packed cells of textura angularis, inner layer composed hyaline, flattened, thick-walled cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising numerous, filamentous, branched, septate, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, short-pedicellate, apex rounded with a minute ocular chamber. Ascospores uniseriate to overlapping uniseriate, muriform, mostly ellipsoidal, 6–10-transversely septate, with 2–3-longitudinal septa, slightly constricted at the middle septum, initially hyaline, becoming dark brown at maturity, rounded at the ends. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wanasinghe et al. 2018).

Type species: Sporormurispora atraphaxidis Wanas., Bulgakov, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Sporormurispora is characterised by black, immersed to erumpent ascomata, cylindrical, short-pedicellate asci and muriform, ellipsoidal ascospores with mostly 6–10-transverse septa and 2–3-longitudinal septa. In the phylogenetic analysis of Wanasinghe et al. (2018) based on LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF and RPB2 sequence data, two species of Sporormurispora formed a monophyletic lineage between Preussia and Sparticola with strong statistical support. Sparticola muriformis is unique from other genera in Sporormiaceae in having muriform ascospores. Sporormurispora is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Sporormiaceae. Molecular markers available for Sporormurispora are ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2.
