Setoarthopyrenia

Setoarthopyrenia Mapook & K.D. Hyde, in Mapook et al., Fungal Diversity 101: 92 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 557361; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07820, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on dead stems. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary, appearing as small spots, coriaceous, globose, brown to dark brown. Ostiolar neck protruding, with numerous external brown to dark brown setae. Peridium 2–3 layers, comprising brown to dark brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium composed of filiform to broadly filiform, septate, branching pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindric-clavate, straight or slightly curved, apically rounded, short pedicellate. Ascospores bi-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid to obovoid, uniseptate, guttulate, constricted at the septum, straight, without gelatinous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Mapook et al. 2020).

Type species: Setoarthopyrenia chromolaenae Mapook & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Setoarthopyrenia is characterised by superficial, solitary ascomata, cylindric-clavate, straight or slightly curved asci and bi-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid to obovoid, uniseptate ascospores. In the phylogenetic analysis of Mapook et al. (2020) based on LSU, ITS, TEF1, RPB2 and SSU sequence data, S. chromolaenae forms a distinct lineage close to Roussoella with high statistical support. Setoarthopyrenia differs from Roussoella in having a protruding ostiole neck, with several external brown to dark brown setae, and bi-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid to obovoid, uniseptate ascospores lacking gelatinous sheath while Roussoella has uniseriate brown fusiform-ellipsoidal ascospores that are ornamented and enclosed by a large mucilaginous sheath (Liu et al. 2014). Setoarthopyrenia is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-supported genus in Roussoellaceae. Molecular markers available for Setoarthopyrenia are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
