Appendispora
Appendispora K.D. Hyde, Sydowia 46(1): 29 (1994).
Index Fungorum number: IF 27283; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08361, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata immersed beneath a stroma, axis horizontal, oblique or vertical to the host surface, clustered, ostiolate. Peridium inwardly comprising hyaline elongate cells, outwardly small brown angular cells. Hamathecium of trabeculae pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, fissitunicate, apically rounded with an ocular chamber and faint ring. Ascospores uniseriate or overlapping uniseriate, fusiform, brown, bicellular, with wall ornamentation and narrow appendages at each end. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde 1994).
Type species: Appendispora frondicola K.D. Hyde
Notes: Appendispora is characterised by immersed ascomata, peridium inwardly comprising hyaline elongate cells of textura angularis, cylindrical, fissitunicate, apically rounded asci and fusiform, brown, bicellular ascospores (Hyde 1994, Ariyawansa et al. 2014). Hyde (1994) placed Appendispora in Didymosphaeriaceae. Ariyawansa et al. (2014) re-described the genus and treated Appendispora in Roussoellaceae based on morphological characters which fit with the familial concept of Roussoellaceae. This taxonomic treatment was followed by other authors (Lumbsch & Huhndorf 2010, Zhang et al. 2012, Hyde et al. 2013, Dai et al. 2017, Jiang et al. 2019, Wijayawadene et al. 2017, 2018, 2020). Molecular data is lacking for the genus and hence, the phylogenetic placement is still unresolved. Fresh collections and sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Appendispora.
