Index Fungorum number: IF 820309; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08358, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Hyphae pale yellow to pale brown, smooth- and thin-walled, septate, 2–3 μm wide. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, brown, solitary or confluent, superficial or immersed (OA), glabrous, subglobose to ovoid, with a single papillate ostiolar neck; pycnidial wall of textura angularis, 2–4 layered, composed of brown, flattened polygonal cells. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, smooth-walled, ampulliform to globose. Conidia aseptate, hyaline, smooth- and thin-walled, ovoid to narrowly ellipsoidal, guttulate. Chlamydospores absent (adapted from Valenz-Lopez et al. 2017).
Type species: Neopyrenochaetopsis hominis Valenz.- Lopez, J.F. Cano, Guarro & Stchigel
Notes: Neopyrenochaetopsis is characterised by pycnidial, brown, solitary or confluent conidiomata, phialidic, ampulliform to globose conidiogenous cells, aseptate, hyaline, smooth- and thin-walled conidia. Neopyrenochaetopsis differs from Pyrenochaetopsis and from similar genera based on the production of smaller conidia, and a yellow diffusing pigment on MEA and OA. Neopyrenochaetopsis is a distinct lineage in Pyrenochaetopsidaceae. Molecular markers available for Neopyrenochaetopsis are ITS, LSU, BTUB and RPB2.
