Importance and distribution
Pseudopyrenochaeta comprises two species. Pseudopyrenochaeta lycopersici was isolated from roots of Lycopersicon esculentum (Solanaceae) in Europe (Germany) while P. terrestris was found from greenhouse soil in Europe (Netherlands). Pyrenochaeta lycopersici subsists in the soil and in repressed tomato roots as microsclerotia (Hasna et al. 2007). The microsclerotia germinate and form mycelium that in turn infect the roots of tomato and other hosts. The disease is commonly known as corky root of tomato (Fiume and Fiume 2003).
