Pseudopyrenochaeta

Pseudopyrenochaeta Valenz.-Lopez, Crous, Stchigel, Guarro & Cano, in Valenzuela-Lopez et al., Stud. Mycol. 90: 53 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 820427; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08352, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Endophytic or pathogenic. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, brown to dark brown, solitary, setose, globose to subglobose, with a papillate ostiolar neck. Conidiophores hyaline, simple, filiform, septate. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, hyaline, intercalary along the conidiophore, arising as very short lateral projections immediately below the transverse septa. Conidia aseptate, hyaline, smooth- and thin-walled, cylindrical to allantoid (adapted from Valenzuela-Lopez et al. 2017).

Type species: Pseudopyrenochaeta lycopersici (R.W. Schneid. & Gerlach) Valenz.-Lopez, Crous, Stchigel, Guarro & J.F. Cano

Notes: Pseudopyrenochaeta is characterised by brown to dark brown conidiomata, hyaline filiform conidiophores, phialidic conidiogenous cells and aseptate, hyaline conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Valenzuela-Lopez et al. (2017), the ex-isotype strain of Pyrenochaeta lycopersici which was previously located in Cucurbitariaceae clustered outside the family Cucurbitariaceae. Hence, the authors introduced Pseudopyrenochaeta to accommodate P. lycopersici and another species P. terrestris. Pseudopyrenochaeta is currently placed in its own family Pseudopyrenochaetaceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudopyrenochaeta are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB and RPB2.
