Stuartella

Stuartella Fabre, Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 6 9: 95 (1879) [1878].

Index Fungorum number: IF 5298; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11841, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Parasitic or saprobic on dead wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial to erumpent on wood, slightly gregarious, subglobose to globose. Peridium comprising 2 layers of dark brown to black cells of textura angularis, top view of ascomata cells showing textura porrecta. Hamathecium comprising branched, aseptate, anastomosed, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical or obovoid, lacking or with very short rounded pedicel, ocular chamber present when immature. Ascospores overlapping, 2−3-seriate, ellipsoid to fusiform, uniseptate at the center when immature, 3-septate at maturity, constricted and darker at the septa, with narrow end cells, hyaline to pale brown when immature, brown to dark brown at maturity, smooth-walled, sometimes with mucous at maturity. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Boonmee et al. 2017).

 Type species: Stuartella formosa Fabre

Notes: Stuartella is characterised by superficial to erumpent ascomata, cylindrical or obovoid asci and 2−3-seriate, ellipsoid to fusiform, uniseptate ascospores. Rehm (1899) placed Stuartella in Sphaeriaceae. Berlese (1894) considered Trematosphaeria irregularis as a synonym of S. formosa but T. irregularis differs from S. formosa in ascospores characters. Höhnel (1913) transferred Stuartella formosa together with Enchnosphaeria pinetorum to Melanommataceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2014) treated Stuartella in Dothideomycetes genera, incertae sedis. Boonmee et al. (2017) could not locate the type specimen of S. formosa and described a specimen of Stuartella drimydis (S-F51087) to represent Stuartella. Boonmee et al. (2017) treated Stuartella in Pleoporales genera incertae sedis based on ascomata and ascospores characters of S. drimydis and S. formosa (Müller 1962). Molecular data is lacking for the genus. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are required to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
