Sirodesmium

Sirodesmium De Not., Mém. R. Accad. Sci. Torino, Ser. 2 10: 348 (1849).

Index Fungorum number: IF 9929; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11837, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hypothallus with continuous threads, simple, intricate. Conidiophores erect, simple, rigid, grouped into a heap or cushion-like form, continuous below, thickened upwards, obscurely septate, oblong or cylindrical phalanges, with very short, translucent, filiform isthmus chained together. Phalanxes articulated, constricted, and with separate vertical septa, and loose. Conidia arising from joints by horizontal division, sub deform-lobed (adapted from De Notaris 1849).

 Type species: Sirodesmium granulosum Sacc.

Notes: Sirodesmium is characterised by simple, intricate hypothallus, erect, simple, rigid conidiophores, articulated, constricted phalanxes and sub-deformed-lobed conidia. Data regarding Sirodesmium is lacking. The taxonomic placement of Sirodesmium is doubtful and is currently placed in Pleosporales genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus. Molecular data is available for two species Sirodesmium diversum (SSU) and S. olivaceum (LSU, SSU, RPB1 and RPB2).
