Phialophorophoma

Phialophorophoma Linder, Farlowia 1(3): 402 (1944) [1943-1944].

Index Fungorum number: IF 9343; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07490, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Pycnidia formed in the blackened area of the woody substratum, immersed, broadly ovoid or ellipsoid, black, sub carbonaceous (deep fuscous under the microscope), excluding the eccentric, broadly conoid or papilliform ostiole. Conidiophores (phialides) hyaline, tapering upward to a short cylindrical neck that is surrounded by a flaring cup-shaped collar. Conidia hyaline, ellipsoid to slipper or pear-shaped, mostly biguttulate, produced endogenously (adapted from Linder 1944).

 Type species: Phialophorophoma litoralis Linder

Notes: Phialophorophoma is characterised by immersed, broadly ovoid or ellipsoid, black, sub carbonaceous pycnidia, hyaline conidiophores and hyaline, ellipsoid to slipper or pear-shaped conidia. LSU and ITS sequence data are available for two strains of Phialophorophoma litoralis (CBS 129112 and CBS 128267). The taxonomic placement of Phialophorophoma is uncertain and is currently in Pleosporales, genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections and more taxa with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
