Paraliomyces

Paraliomyces Kohlm., Nova Hedwigia 1(1): 81 (1959).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3704; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11821, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascostromata immersed, penetrating into the substrate with dark brown hyphae. Ascomata medium-sized, solitary, immersed or erumpent, subglobose to pyriform, subiculate or nonsubiculate, papillate or epapillate, ostiolate, periphysate, carbonaceous. Peridium thick. Hamathecium of long trabeculate pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, with a short furcate pedicel, without apical apparatus, uniseriate. Ascospores ellipsoid to broadly fusoid with broadly rounded ends, uniseptate, constricted at the septum, hyaline, smooth-walled, surrounded by a gelatinous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2012).

Type species: Paraliomyces lentifer Kohlm.

Notes: Paraliomyces is characterised by immersed ascomata, long trabeculate pseudoparaphyses, cylindrical asci with a short furcate pedicel and ellipsoid to broadly fusoid with broadly rounded ends ascospores surrounded by a gelatinous sheath. In the phylogenetic analysis of Tam et al. (2003) based on SSU sequence data, Paraliomyces formed a distinct lineage in Pleosporales but the familial rank is still uncertain. Paraliomyces is currently placed in Pleosporales genera incertae sedis. Only SSU sequence data is available for Paraliomyces lentifer. Fresh collections and more taxa with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
