Paraepicoccum

Paraepicoccum Matsush., Matsush. Mycol. Mem. 7: 59 (1993).

Index Fungorum number: IF 26487; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02155, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead leaves or branches. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Sporodochia dark, dense. Conidiophores simple or branched, pale, olivaceous or golden brown, smooth, septate, with one or several apical conidiogenous loci. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, pale brown. Conidia in vivo: ellipsoidal, obclavate or subspherical, yellowish brown and 0–1 septate when young, becoming brown, muriform with several longitudinal or oblique septa when mature, finely guttulate; in vitro: yellowish to golden brown (adapted from Thambugala et al. 2016).

Type species: Paraepicoccum amazonense Matsush.

Notes: Paraepicoccum is characterised by dark, dense sporodochia, simple or branched, pale olivaceous or golden-brown conidiophores, monoblastic, pale brown conidiogenous cells and ellipsoidal, obclavate or subspherical, yellowish brown and 0–1 septate conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2016) based on ITS, LSU, SSU, TEF-1, β-TUB and RPB2 sequence data, Paraepicoccum formed a distinct lineage in Camarosporium sensu stricto. Thambugala et al. (2016) retained Paraepicoccum in Pleosporales, genera incertae sedis as only coelomycetous asexual morphs have been reported in Camarosporium sensu stricto (Wijayawardene et al. 2014, Thambugala et al. 2016). Thambugala et al. (2016) provided an epitype of Paraepicoccum amazonense (MFLU 16-0672). The placement of Paraepicoccum is uncertain and more taxa with DNA sequence data is needed to confirm the taxonomic status of the genus. Molecular data available for Paraepicoccum ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
