Typhicola

Typhicola Crous, in Crous et al., Fungal Systematics and Evolution 3: 121 (2019).

Index Fungorum number: IF 829599; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07524, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata gregarious along leaf veins, immersed, globose with central ostiole, somewhat papillate to erumpent, black, soft. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, hyaline, smooth, branched with anastomoses, hyphae-like. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, subcylindrical, with well-developed ocular chamber, thick-walled, short papillate. Ascospores ellipsoid, septate, straight to slightly curved, end cells conically rounded, brown, thick-walled, prominently constricted at thick septa, with mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Crous et al. 2019).

Type species: Typhicola typharum (Desm.) Crous

Notes: Typhicola is characterised by immersed, globose with central ostiole ascomata, fissitunicate, subcylindrical asci, and ellipsoid, septate, straight to slightly curved ascospores. Typhicola resembles Juncaceicola but these two genera can be differentiated based on DNA sequence data. Typhicola is a distinct genus in Pleosporaceae. Molecular markers available for Typhicola include ITS, LSU, SSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
