Decorospora

Decorospora Inderb., Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm., in Inderbitzin et al., Mycol. Progr. 1(4): 657 (2002).

Index Fungorum number: IF 28671; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00514, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata subglobose to ellipsoidal, immersed, ostiolate, epapillate or short papillate, carbonaceous, black. Peridium composed of thick-walled cells with large lumina, forming a textura angularis in longitudinal section. Hamathecium composed of septate, ramose pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, clavate, short pedunculate, thick-walled, fissitunicate, without apical apparatuses. Ascospores biseriate, ellipsoidal, muriform, brown, covered by a gelatinous sheath that is slightly constricted around the center and drawn out at each apex into 2 or rarely 3 subconical extension. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Inderbitzin et al. 2002).

Type species: Decorospora gaudefroyi (Pat.) Inderb., Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm.

Notes: Decorospora is characterised by subglobose to ellipsoidal ascomata, 8-spored, clavate, short pedunculate asci, and ellipsoidal, muriform, brown ascospores surrounded by a gelatinous sheath (Kohlmeyer & Kohlmeyer 1964, 1979). Musa et al. (2011) described the ultrastructure of the ascospores of D. gaudefroyi in the ascus highlighting the gelatinous sheath. Hyde et al. (1986) illustrated an ascospore with extended sheath in SEM. Decorospora is unique in its characteristically ornamented ascospores. Decorospora resembles Nimbospora but can be differentiated in that the latter has ascospores with a gelatinous sheath, enclosing several subulate appendages (Kohlmeyer 1985). Decorospora is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Pleosporaceae. Molecular markers available for Decorospora are ITS, LSU and SSU.
