Pleomonodictys
Pleomonodictys Hern. -Restr., J. Mena & Gené, in Hernández-Restrepo et al., Stud. Mycol. 86: 77 (2017).
Index Fungorum number: IF 820280; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08345, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies effuse, black. Mycelium mostly immersed, composed of branched, septate, smooth often verruculose hyphae. Conidiophores micronematous or semi-macronematous, often reduced to conidiogenous loci on the hyphae. Conidia blastic, solitary or in short chains, variable in shape, muriform, dark brown to black, verrucose to tuberculate (adapted from Hernández-Restrepo et al. 2017).
Type species: Pleomonodictys descalsii Hern. -Restr., J. Mena & Gené
Notes: Pleomonodictys is characterised by micronematous or semi-macronematous conidiophores, and blastic, solitary or in short chains, variable in shape, muriform, dark brown to black, verrucose to tuberculate conidia. Pleomonodictys comprises two species P. descalsii and P. capensis which was earlier treated in Monodictys. Pleomonodictys differs from Monodictys in having verrucose to tuberculate conidia and/or hyphae. Monodictys is polyphyletic distributed among different classes mainly Dothideomycetes, Sordariomycetes and Leotiomycetes (Campbell et al. 2002, Han et al. 2014, Tanaka et al. 2015, Hernández-Restrepo et al. 2017) while Pleomonodictys is a well-supported and distinct genus in Pleomonodictydaceae. Molecular markers available for Pleomonodictys are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
