Pleohelicoon

Pleohelicoon Jayasiri, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde, in Jayasiri et al., Mycosphere 10(1): 98 (2019).

Index Fungorum number: IF 555565; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05271, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on Fagus sylvatica. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Colonies on substrate scattered or in groups, arising terminally from short, undifferentiated, superficial, hyaline hyphal branches, shiny black, ellipsoidal conidia are visible. Mycelium scanty mostly immersed. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, unbranched, straight, hyaline to brown, smooth. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, terminal and determinate. Conidia solitary, acrogenous, simple, pale brown to dark fuscous, nearly always clockwise tightly coiled 7–9 times in 3 planes to form an ovoid, spherical, ellipsoidal, hollow, doliiform spore body, with multiseptate conidial filament, with 5–12 septa per coil, slightly constricted at the septa, 7–9 μm thick. Microconidia hyaline, globose, aggregated, guttulate, located inside macroconidia (adapted from Jayasiri et al. 2019).

Type species: Pleohelicoon fagi Jayasiri, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Pleohelicoon is characterised by acronematous, mononematous, unbranched, straight, hyaline to brown, smooth conidiophores, monoblastic, integrated, terminal and determinate conidiogenous cells and acrogenous, simple, pale brown to dark fuscous conidia. Pleohelicoon differs from Helicoon in that the latter comprises species with non-proliferating, ellipsoidal to doliiform conidia while Pleohelicoon is characterised by solitary acrogenous, simple conidia (Morgan 1892). Pleohelicoon resembles Helicoon but the latter is a polyphyletic genus distributed in different orders namely Orbiliales, Pleosporales, Pleurotheciales, Tubeufiales and Venturiales. Pleohelicoon is also similar to Pseudohelicoon but the latter comprises helicoon-like species belonging to the order Tubeufiales while Pleohelicoon belongs to Pleosporales. Pleohelicoon is phylogenetically related to Pleomonodictys (Pleomonodictydaceae) but differs morphologically in that the latter has blastic conidia that are produced solitary or in short chains, muriform, verrucose to tuberculate and variable in shape. Pleohelicoon is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Pleomonodictydaceae. Molecular markers available for Pleohelicoon are ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2.
