Importance and role

Importance of genus to ecosystem

Species of Splanchnonema are saprobic and helps in decomposition of organic matter in the ecosystem.

Industrial relevance and applications

The industrial application of Splanchnonema has not been investigated.

Quarantine significance

No disease has been reported from Splanchnonema.

Biochemical importance of the genus, chemical diversity or applications

The chemical diversity of Splanchnonema has not been reported.

Diversity of the genus

Even though there are 41 Splanchnonema species in Index fungorum, the real number of species is less as several species have been synonymized and transferred to other genera such as Helminthosporium, Kirschsteiniothelia, Massaria, Metacapnodium, Pleomassaria, Pseudosplanchnonema and Splanchospora. Splanchnonema has wide host range such as Tilia sp. (On limbs.) (Malvaceae), Annona squamosa (Annonaceae), Betula ermanii (Betulaceae), Bauhinia variegata (Fabaceae), Carpinus betulus (Betulaceae), Magnolia acuminata (On twigs) (Magnoliaceae), Celtis sp. (On limbs) (Cannabaceae), Ulmus glabra (Ulmaceae), Carya ovata (On limbs) (Juglandaceae), Corylus avellana (Betulaceae), Fagus grandifolia (On limbs) (Fagaceae), Quercus undulata (On limbs) (Fagaceae), Nolina sp. (Asparagaceae), Morus alba (Moraceae), Platanus sp. (On limbs) (Platanaceae), Acer sp. (On limbs) (Sapindaceae), Ulmus sp. (Ulmaceae), Sambucus callicarpa (Caprifoliaceae), Vaccinium parvifolium (Ericaceae), Cinnamomum sp. (Lauraceae) amongst others.  Splanchnonema has wide geographical distribution such as California, Canada, Colorado, Columbia, France, Georgia, India, Iowa, Japan, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Poland, South Carolina, Sweden, Taiwan, Texas, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vermont, Virginia amongst others. An attempt to collect more species of Splanchnonema from unexplored hosts and regions is needed.
