Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, light fuscous at maturity, septate, unbranched, erect, straight to slightly flexuous. Conidiogenous cells integrated, holoblastic, terminal. Conidia hyaline, fuscous when mature, lenticular, horizontally flattened; viewed from above, oval to almost rectangular (with rounded edges); consisting of an internal, strictly dichotomous branching system and an outer distinctly clathrate layer, which is produced by eight outermost branches (four on upper side, four on lower side of a conidium) of the internal branching system (adapted from Tian et al. 2015).

Notes: Beverwykella is characterised by macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, integrated, holoblastic, terminal conidiogenous cells, and hyaline, fuscous, oval to almost rectangular (with rounded edges) conidia. Beverwykella pulmonaria was previously known as Papulaspora pulmonaria (Beverwijk 1954), a well-known aeroaquatic taxon found in temperate to subtropical Northern Hemisphere (Voglmayr and Delgado-Rodríguez 2003). Molecular data is lacking for the type species of Beverwykella. Zhang et al. (2009b) studied the phylogenetic relationship of B. pulmonaria based on LSU and RPB2 sequence data and pointed out that B. pulmonaria is the asexual morph of Melanomma pulvis-pyrius. De Gruyter et al. (2013) suggested that B. pulmonaria is closely related to Aposphaeria corallinolutea and cannot be the asexual morph of Melanomma pulvis-pyrius. Tian et al. (2015) collected fresh specimen of B. pulmonaria from England and designated the latter as reference specimen as it formed a lineage with Beverwykella pulmonaria (CBS 283.53) with high statistical support. Tian et al. (2015) excluded Beverwykella and transferred it to Pleomassariaceae. Beverwykella is currently a distinct genus in Pleomassariaceae but only one species has molecular data. More collections of Beverwykella with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus. Molecular data available for Beverwykella include ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2.
