Xenoseptoria
Xenoseptoria Quaedvl., H.D. Shin, Verkley & Crous, Stud. Mycol. 75: 371 (2013).
Index Fungorum number: IF 804446; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00277, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Foliicolous, plant pathogenic. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata separate, pycnidial, immersed becoming erumpent, globose, brown, developing 1–3 papillate necks, exuding a pink to orange conidial mass; wall of 4–8 layers of brown textura angularis. Conidiophores hyaline, smooth, reduced to conidiogenous cells or septate, branched below. Conidiogenous cells lining the inner cavity, hyaline, smooth, ampulliform to doliiform or subcylindrical, mono- to polyphialidic, with prominent periclinal thickening, but also with percurrent proliferation. Conidia hyaline, smooth, guttulate, scolecosporous, straight to irregularly curved, cylindrical to obclavate, transversely euseptate, tapering to subobtuse apex, base obtuse (adapted from Quaedvlieg et al. 2013).
Type species: Xenoseptoria neosaccardoi Quaedvl., H.D. Shin, Verkley & Crous
Notes: Xenoseptoria is characterised by separate, pycnidial conidiomata, hyaline, smooth conidiophores, ampulliform to doliiform or subcylindrical, mono- to polyphialidic conidiogenous cells and hyaline, smooth, guttulate, scolecosporous conidia. Xenoseptoria differs from Septoria s. str. in forming pycnidia with multiple papillate necks and producing conidiogenous cells that are mono- or polyphialidic. Xenoseptoria is a distinct and well-supported genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Xenoseptoria are ITS, LSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
