Xenophaeosphaeria

Xenophaeosphaeria Crous & M.J. Wingf., in Crous et al., Persoonia 33: 253 (2014).

Index Fungorum number: IF 810612; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08342, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Caulicolous. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary to gregarious, immersed, opening via a central ostiole, somewhat papillate, globose, brown; wall of 3–4 layers of brown textura angularis. Pseudoparaphyses intermingled among asci, hyaline, smooth, septate, hyphal-like, anastomosing. Asci clavate to fusoid-ellipsoid, fasciculate, short-stipitate with apical chamber, bitunicate, ascospores uni- to biseriate, overlapping, 8-spored. Ascospores brown, guttulate, smooth, fusoid-ellipsoid, straight, apex obtusely rounded, base subobtusely rounded, medianly euseptate, but each cell contains 2–4 distosepta. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Crous et al. 2014).

Type species: Xenophaeosphaeria grewiae Crous & M.J. Wingf.

Notes: Xenophaeosphaeria is characterised by solitary to gregarious, immersed ascomata, clavate to fusoid-ellipsoid, fasciculate, short-stipitate asci and brown, guttulate, smooth, fusoid-ellipsoid, straight ascospores. Xenophaeosphaeria resembles Neomassariosphaeria and Neophaeosphaeria but can be differentiated based on the ascospore septation. The asexual morph of Xenophaeosphaeria is unknown. Xenophaeosphaeria is a clearly defined genus in the Phaeosphaeriaceae (Zhang et al. 2009, 2012). Molecular markers available for Xenophaeosphaeria are ITS and LSU.
