Pseudostaurosphaeria
Pseudostaurosphaeria Mapook & K.D. Hyde, in Mapook et al., Fungal Diversity 101: 81 (2020).
Index Fungorum number: IF 557354; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07813, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on dead stems. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, solitary, immersed or semi-immersed to superficial, uniloculate, globose to subglobose, pale brown to brown or dark brown. Ostiole central, short papillate or apapillate. Pycnidial wall comprising 3–4 layers of thick-walled, hyaline or pale brown to light brown cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells holoblastic, ampulliform to cylindrical or oblong, hyaline, unbranched. Conidia globose or oblong to obovoid, 1–2-transverse septa, later developing 1–2-vertical septa, muriform, smooth walled, slightly constricted at the septa, yellowish brown to brown or reddish brown, with single polar appendage from apex, observed clearly when mounted in Indian ink (adapted from Mapook et al. 2020).
Type species: Pseudostaurosphaeria chromolaenicola Mapook & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Pseudostaurosphaeria is characterised by solitary, immersed or semi-immersed to superficial, uniloculate conidiomata, holoblastic, ampulliform to cylindrical or oblong, hyaline conidiogenous cells and globose or oblong to obovoid 1–2- septate conidia. Pseudostaurosphaeria resembles the asexual morph of Staurosphaeria in having reddish brown conidia with a transverse septum forming vertical septa which divides the conidium into four sections on maturity. Pseudostaurosphaeria is however phylogenetically distinct from Staurosphaeria and the latter belongs to Coniothyriaceae (Wanasinghe et al. 2017). Pseudostaurosphaeria is phylogenetically closely related to Yunnanensis but the latter has muriform conidia, ellipsoidal to obovoid with 3-transverse septa, and 1 vertical septum while Pseudostaurosphaeria is characterised by globose or oblong to obovoid, 1–2-transverse septate (Mapook et al. 2020). Pseudostaurosphaeria is a distinct and clearly defined genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudostaurosphaeria are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
