Pseudoophiosphaerella J.F. Zhang, J.K. Liu & Z.Y. Liu, in Zhang et al., Mycosphere 8(1): 207 (2019).
Index Fungorum number: IF 556244; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05835, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on dead culms of herbaceous plant. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, solitary to gregarious, globose to subglobose, dark brown to black, immersed to erumpent, ostiolate. Hamathecium comprising numerous, hyphae-like, trabeculate, branched pseudoparaphyses. Asci cylindrical, 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, short pedicellate, apically rounded. Ascospores filiform, fasciculate, hyaline and aseptate when young, become pale-yellowish and multiseptate at maturation, lying parallel or spirally coiled, obtuse in one end and towards acute in another end, smooth-walled, guttulate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2019).
Type species: Pseudoophiosphaerella huishuiensis J.F. Zhang, J.K. Liu & Z.Y. Liu
Notes: Pseudoophiosphaerella is characterised by scattered, solitary to gregarious, globose to subglobose ascomata, cylindrical, 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, short pedicellate asci and filiform, fasciculate, hyaline to pale yellowish ascospores. Pseudoophiosphaerella is closely related to Dlhawksworthia but differs in having filiform ascospores while Dlhawksworthia has ellipsoidal or muriform ascospores. Pseudoophiosphaerella resembles Ophiosphaerella in having long cylindrical asci with septate, filiform ascospores but both genera are phylogenetically distant. Pseudoophiosphaerella is a distinct and well-defined genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Pseudoophiosphaerella are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF-1.
