Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata solitary, pycnidial, globose with central ostiole, pale brown, exuding a creamy conidial mass. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells lining inner cavity, ampulliform, hyaline, smooth, phialidic. Conidia solitary, aseptate, smooth, hyaline, straight, guttulate, subcylindrical with obtuse ends (adapted from Crous et al. 2019).

Type species: Piniphoma wesendahlina Crous & R.K. Schumach.

Notes: Piniphoma is characterised by solitary, pycnidial, globose with central ostiole, pale brown conidiomata, and solitary, aseptate, smooth, hyaline conidia. Piniphoma is a phoma-like genus but is phylogenetically distinct from other phoma-like genera currently known. Piniphoma is a distinct genus in Phaeosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Piniphoma are ITS, LSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
