Phaeosphaeriopsis

Phaeosphaeriopsis M.P.S. Câmara, M.E. Palm & A.W. Ramaley, in Câmara et al., Mycol. Res. 107(5): 519 (2003).

Index Fungorum number: IF 28717; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07629, 8 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 6 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata immersed, subepidermal, usually erumpent at maturity and pushing up flaps of the epidermis, globose to subglobose to pyriform, often papillate, solitary or gregarious in a stroma of scleroplectenchyma or dark brown textura angularis or textura prismatica, often surrounded by septate, brown hyphae extending into the host tissues. Asci bitunicate, cylindric. Ascospores cylindric, broadly rounded at apex, tapering to narrowly rounded base, 4–5-septate, first septum submedian, often constricted, brown, echinulate, punctate or verrucose. Asexual morph: Coniothyrium-like or Phaeostagonospora (Ramaley 1997). Conidiomata pseudoparenchymatous, sometimes of scleroplectenchyma. Conidiogenous cells lining locule; conidiogenesis holoblastic, proliferating per currently resulting in inconspicuous annellations. Conidia cylindrical, often truncate at ends, 0–3-septate, yellowish brown, punctate. Sometimes only bacillar microconidia produced from simple, apparently non proliferating phialides (adapted from Camara et al. 2003).

Type species: Phaeosphaeriopsis glaucopunctata (Grev.) M.P.S. Câmara, M.E. Palm & A.W. Ramaley

Notes: Phaeosphaeriopsis was introduced to accommodate paraphaeosphaeria-like taxa. Phaeosphaeriopsis is characterised by scattered to clustered, gregarious, immersed to erumpent, globose to subglobose, ostiolate, papillate or apapillate ascomata, brown to dark brown, thin-walled peridium, fissitunicate, broadly cylindrical to cylindric-clavate asci, with broad cellular pseudo paraphyses and pigmented, oblong to cylindrical, septate, smooth- to rough-walled, punctate or verrucose ascospores (Phookamsak et al. 2014, Thambugala et al. 2014). The asexual morph of Phaeosphaeriopsis is characterised by coelomycetous coniothyrium-like or Phaeostagonospora (Câmara et al. 2003, Phookamsak et al. 2014, Thambugala et al. 2014). The sexual-asexual morph connection of Phaeosphaeriopsis has been reported by Câmara et al. (2003), Phookamsak et al. (2014) and Thambugala et al. (2014). Since then, several Phaeosphaeriopsis species were introduced (Crous et al. 2016, Tibpromma et al. 2017, Marin-Felix et al. 2019, Hyde et al. 2020). Molecular markers available for Phaeosphaeriopsis are ITS, LSU, SSU, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1.
